People act based on their beliefs.
Certain beliefs are beneficial for certain people. For example, Machiavelli argued that a prince need to be feared and loved. In a twisted sense, “fair” simply means beliefs that whoever screw me get screwed and whoever bless me got blessed. Somehow.
Because of that, people always maintain the beliefs that they are fair, honorable, feared, nice, and good to the point of decepting themselves.
People are stupid. Not in a sense that they’re idiot. Most of us are programmers, engineers, free thinkers, etc. We don’t know politic. I don’t when I was young. I barely know the surface of it now.
It’s difficult to tell truth. They won’t believe it anyway and would hate you. It’s like Adam Smith telling people that humans’ are selfish. In the long run, it works. In the short run, people simply hate Adam Smith for “demeaning” humans.
The same goes for statements like “women prefer the rich,” “males want to get rid competitors out of market,” “humans’ mating strategies are similar with chimps.” In the long run we may come up with something workable on that, but now, people would simply claim that it’s false, demeaning, offensive, against religious dogma, etc.
Life is not a zero sum game, however aspects of life that’s not zero sum game is small. In ancient time, wealth for one means poverty for the others. Hence, in ancient time, people lie, and force, to get rich. That’s the only way to be rich in ancient time.
When libertarian somehow wins, and they are winning little by little, then only the best will survive. Most are not the best. Most are not going to be the best no matter how hard they tried.
Most instinctively understand, through their emotion fine tuned by evolutions that it is far easier and rewarding to change the world rather than changing themselves. Being a dictator and his cronies (yes dictators are almost always males) does not require as high IQ as being a programmer and in most societies it’s simply more rewarding. That’s what most people do and it’s often what they do. When people oppose free fair competition, that’s what’s lucrative.
The same way, nowadays, power is a zero sum game. The same can be said about reproductive success. That’s a huge part of humans’ utility function.
Trying to come up with a certain win win solution simply won’t work. It’s simply to profitable for anyone with enough political skills to simply lie to the mass. It’s almost a zero sum game. There is very little intensive to cooperate.
Politicians that don’t lie to the mass will be out powered by those who do, on those areas.
We’re not making the world a better place by being moral. If anything, we could be making the world a better place by being selfish, greedy, bigotic, well maybe not bigotic, and hypocritical. That’s because if we don’t, someone else will, and that someone else will be even worse. Politicians simply need more competition to cut down their profit margin. Yes we can tell the world the truth, but beware, it may not work.
Hence, we have religions. Just like in ancient time, we used to have genocide, mass looting, and false propaganda. It’s a bad solution. But quite often, the other ways are just too difficult. Sure maybe one day we can examine problems rationally like Denmark the same way we moved over genocide, mass looting, and tyrants. It’s not going to be easy.
My message to libertarians is simple. It’s the real world. Just see it the way it really is and take your gloves off. It’s hard to win with too much self imposed morality that doesn’t even matter anyway.
Machiavelli stated this very obviously. It’s important to look religious but it’s dangerous to be truly are. Replace words of religious with moral, any moral, and you’ll get the point.
